Cleveland Poetry Slam

This month starts the series of open poetry competitions, called "Poetry Slams," to select four poets who will represent Cleveland in the National Poetry Slam in San Francisco September 29 to October 3.

It's a little more tension filled than a

poetry reading; a Poetry Slam is performance poetry with five judges scoring points for performance and content. Anyone over 18 who lives in Cuyahoga and adjacent counties is eligible. Poems-no longer than three minutes-must be read by the author; no music or props are allowed. No entry fee but donations are needed.

To enter, sign up at the beginning of any of the following festivals; no late arrivals will be accepted. The "Kick Off Slam" is on Saturday, July 10, 2 pm at the Euclid Arcade, E. 5th and Euclid Ave. downtown. The next several competitions are Sunday, July 18, 4 pm at Cafe Afrika, 11902 Buckeye Rd.; Sunday, July 25, 4 pm at Southwest Cafe, 5877 Broadview Rd. in Parma; Monday, August 2, 7 pm at Arabica University Circle, 11300 Juniper; and Sunday, August 8, 11:30 am at Fagans, 996 Old River Rd. Call 321-0168 for more information.

Spaces

Three free exhibitions are on display through July 30. "Form Out of Context" features four Ohio artists who emphasize the formal qualities of common objects: mixed media by Richard Roth of Columbus, paintings by Mark Keffer of Cleveland, sculpture by Clarke Stallworth of Columbus and Toi Ungkavatanapong of Oxford.

"For Lack of Words," an installation exploring transparency, shadow and texture by Mercedes Teixido of Baltimore, is on display in the installation and video room. The third exhibit, "Watershed Investigations," color aerial photographs of rural

The gallery is at 2220 Superior Viaduct, parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge off West 25th Street. 621-2314.

Metroparks recreation

Beginning Canoeing offers a three-part classroom and an "on the water" program on Hinckley Lake that includes skill development and time for nature exploring. The evening class is July 21 and remaining sessions can be selected from four groups of dates. The $45 cost includes instruction, canoe use, and boating equipment.

Beginning Nature Photography is a four-part program-indoor instruction and a field trip-teaching the basics of 35mm nature photography including best lighting conditions and subject composition. Sessions are July 20 and 27, August 1 and 17. $45 cost includes instruction. Participants must provide their own camera with adjustable shutter and f-stops.

Advance registration is required for these programs. Call 341-1704 to register or for more information.

DanceCleveland

The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company opens the concert season on July 16 in the Evans Amphitheater at Cain Park, Cleveland Heights. Celebrating their 25th anniversary, Lubovitch's choreography combines the limitless flow of his imagination with sensuous musicality and irrepressible momentum. The company is presented in collaboration with Cain Park.

Future bookings feature Pilobolus Dance Theatre in November and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in May. For subscription information call DanceCleveland at 861-2213.
